Committee Updates:
Executive:
The Executive committee met on Thursday, October 3rd. They discussed the plans for our upcoming October General Body Meeting (discussed more in “Upcoming Events”), the Steering Committee, Tabling, and the Police Crimes Town Hall, which has been delayed to February. Organizing:
The Organizing committee met on Tuesday, October 2nd. They are currently focused on the Southern Regional Organizing Conference (SROC), the Incarcerated People’s Campaign (IPC), and jail support. The goal of the IPC is to outreach to currently incarcerated individuals and their families by sending care packages, letters, and surveys about the Alliance. Jail support focuses on finding ways to help those who are wrongly convicted. The full meeting notes can be found here.
Outreach:
The Outreach committee met on Tuesday, October 1st. They discussed the status on tabling inputs as well as the new tabling literature that is to be made. They also reviewed the recent movie screening of Residue and concluded that more movie screenings should occur in the future. They also discussed the progress on social media and of the new business cards, as well as the outreach for the upcoming GBM. Finally, they went over the upcoming action to protest the election on November 5th. The full meeting notes can be found here.
Finance:
The Finance committee met on Thursday, October 3rd. They went over the budget report and decided to lower the price of the new DC Alliance stickers. They then discussed the new logo design, which is meant to be ready before the November 5th action. Finally, they discussed a possible upcoming fundraising event for Halloween as well as the potential costs for a business card order. The full meeting notes can be found here.
Administrative:
The Administrative Committee met on Monday, September 30th. They discussed what was learned from creating the last issue of the newsletter, how to divide up tasks for the next issue, and potentially creating a physical version of the newsletter to hand out during tabling. They also discussed the Steering Committee, and scheduled a working meeting to discuss the DC Alliance’s political education and orientation efforts. The full meeting notes can be found here.
Recent Events
Rally for Justin Robinson:
On Tuesday, September 17th, the D.C. Alliance held a rally at the D.C. Police Department's 7th District Precinct. The rally was held to demand justice for Justin Robinson who was murdered by the 7th District Police on Sunday, September 1st as well as all victims of police violence. Many local organizations endorsed and participated in the action including: Freedom Road Socialist Organization - DC, Party for Socialism and Liberation DC, Harriet’s Wildest Dreams, Anakbayan DC, Pan-African Community Action, the International League of Peoples’ Struggles Baltimore/DMV, Communist Party of the United States of America DC, Students for Justice in Palestine DMV Coalition, Black Lives Matter DC, GW Black Defiance, and the Palestinian Youth Movement.
PYM’s One Year of Resistance Action:
On Saturday, October 5th, the Palestinian Youth Movement held an action to mark one year of genocide and resistance in Palestine. The DC Alliance and all of our affiliate organizations were proud to stand alongside the Palestinian movement and make it clear that we will not sit quietly while our government funds the genocide of the Palestinian people.
Coalition to Protest the Election Organizing Call:
On Monday, October 14th, the DC Alliance hosted an organizing call to unite local progressive organizations in protesting the upcoming elections and inauguration. Attendees included the Freedom Road Socialist Organization DC, the Palestinian Youth Movement DMV, the International League of People’s Struggles Baltimore/DMV, and Pan-African Community Action.
Upcoming Events:
Sunday, October 20th - 12:00pm to 6:00pm -
PYM Picnic: In replacement of their annual Fallasteen Festival, PYM DMV are hosting the Ta3ziz Al-Sumud, Strengthening Steadfastness Community Picnic on Oct 20 from 12-6pm. The main goal of the event is to fundraise for Gaza, and will feature things for community members of all ages: food, refreshments, cultural performances, a passport activity for kids, a film component, a raffle of items, and more! All proceeds will support the Middle East Children's Alliance. Address: 1600 S Hayes Street, Arlington, VA 22202
DCAARPR Social/GBM (Oct. 25th) - Friday, October 25th - 8:00 pm:
Next Friday, the DC Alliance will be holding its October GBM/Social. All members and community members are encouraged to come out, meet other members, and learn what the next couple of months have in store for the DC Alliance. Doors open at 8pm. Address: 4306 Urn Street, Capitol Heights, MD
FRSO October Revolution Discussion - Saturday, October 26th - 2:30 to 4:30 pm:
Next Saturday, the Freedom Road Socialist Organization - DC will be holding a group educational discussion to commemorate the 107th anniversary of the October Revolution. Anyone interested is encouraged to come out and learn about the October Revolution, its lessons to the world, and how FRSO learns from those lessons and keeps the legacy alive. No prior knowledge is needed, and all are welcome to attend. Address: 1800 Marion Barry Avenue SE, Washington, DC 20020
